I am a technical author based out of Falkirk, Scotland. Technical writing is about getting technical information about a software (or hardware) product from subject matter experts and writing about it in such a way that the target user can not only use the software, but really understand it.
Technical authoring is something I feel passionately about. Some really great software products could be improved immensely if only users knew how to use all of their features.
I take on documentation projects, big or small, one-off documents to permanent contract positions. I’ve written full user manuals, quick start guides, release notes and other types of documents. I also do marketing copy and training guides. If your company requires an author, please get in touch!
Most recently, I worked for Autonomy, an HP company in Cambridge as one of their staff writers with a large portfolio of projects. Before working for Autonomy, I graduated in 2010 from The University of Edinburgh with a Master of Arts with Honours Linguistics. During my third year at university, I worked part-time as the technical writer for Valley Technology. Samples of my work there can be found on my documentation portfolio page.
While at university, I spent most of my free time learning about technology with the the Edinburgh University Theatre Company, the Edinburgh University Computing Society, and the Edinburgh Linux Users Group. I also have a keen interest in photography and digital darkroom. I’m never without my computer and/or tablet and, I always look forward to experimenting with new software. Where I am able, my work is completed with free and open-source software. See my presentations and publicity pages for more information.
